Thieves steal dogs from El Cajon animal shelter

EL CAJON , CA  - Police are on the hunt for two men accused of dog-napping two pit bulls from the El Cajon Animal Shelter.
The thieves made off with the dogs Friday afternoon just before the shelter closed.
Police believe they may be planning to use the pit bulls for dog fighting.
El Cajon police say two middle-aged men came into the shelter on North Marshall Ave. just before 5 p.m. Friday.
They inquired about two pit bulls and when the attendant left for a few minutes the two men made their moves.
One pit bull is brown and white and is about 7 years old. The other is blue and white and about 7 months old.
Officials don't know why the men took them, but say dog fighting is a possibility.
Red signs warn folks that animal thieves will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, which the patron hopes happens.
If the culprits don't come clean, they will face serious charges.
Police say the dogs are microchipped and would have only been $80 each to adopt.
Investigators do have some good leads on the suspects whereabouts. If you have any information call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

Protect Wolves in California

The arrival of California's first confirmed wild wolf in nearly 90 years poses an incredible opportunity to recover a native species. But wolves returning to this state face threats to their survival.
Elected officials in counties where OR-7 was traveling have said they think wolves should be shot on sight; and they have asked the state wildlife agency to oppose legal protections for wolves.
Members of the public have also made threats against wolves in response to online news articles, including threats to shoot, shovel and shut up. But with legal protection under the California Endangered Species Act, wolves can and will return to California.

Please help us ensure that these beautiful animals are legally protected in the Golden State by sending an email to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to ensure crucial information about wolves is included in its final report and to urge it to list gray wolves under the California Endangered Species Act.

Dog Leads Owner To 89-Year-Old Dementia Patient Who Wandered From Home

MARTINSVILLE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – An elderly New Jersey woman is safe thanks to a heroic dog.
The woman had been outside in the cold for hours when the quick-thinking canine found her. For 2-year-old “Creature,” it proved to be a life-saving discovery.
Like any other night, the pit bull had to go out to take care of business Thursday.
But within minutes, the dog’s owner said she knew something was wrong when Creature pulled her outside.
“When I brought her back outside, back to the same spot, heard the stick again cracking and that’s when she took off again barking,” dog owner Cara Jones told CBS 2′s Christine Sloan.
“Creature” had come across Carmen Mitchell, who suffers from dementia. Mitchell was laying in the woods about a half a mile away from her Piscataway home.
“I saw a hand pop up to block the flashlight,” Jones said. “I saw she had mud on her, she was barefoot and I grabbed the dog to bring her back inside.”
Mitchell’s caretaker had just turned her back for a second when the 89-year-old made her way out the front door.
“Words can’t even explain how I was feeling last night,” caretaker Rochelle Mason said.
The elderly woman’s daughter, Christine Mitchell, said she was worried sick.

“Had no coat on, no shoes on and she just took off. We [drove] everywhere, we couldn’t find her,” she said. “Very scared, I lost my voice when they told me they found her.”
Mitchell was in the cold for eight hours Thursday night. Had it not been for Creature’s keen sense of smell, the result could have been tragic.
The heroic efforts of the pit bull are just a clear example of how smart dogs really are.
“They do get a bad rap. You’re always seeing them on the news,” Jones said of the pit bull breed. “It breaks my heart because there are so many dogs who don’t get a chance to be seen or heard, to tell their own story.”
Carmen Mitchell was taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia. Her daughter said she can’t wait to meet “Creature” and her owner.
